Regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation by interferons.

چکیده
The interferons are a widely studied group of proteins which were first identified by their ability to protect cells against virus infections (Stewart, 1979). They are synthesized and secreted by a variety of cell types in response to several classes of inducers (notably virus infections) and exert their effects in vivo as a result of interaction with other cells in distant parts of the body. In this sense the interferons are analogous to the polypeptide hormones. A functional similarity with hormones is further emphasized by the recent identification in target cells of specific membrane receptors for interferons and by the multiplicity of biological effects which result from the interactions of the interferons with these receptors. In recent years it has become clear that the interferons are capable of influencing cellular physiology and behaviour in a number of ways. Their effects include inhibition of cell growth and proliferation, regulation of the expression of specific genes, modulation of cell differentiation, and activation of certain cell types in the immune system (e.g. macrophages and natural killer cells). The mechanisms underlying the antiviral actions of the interferons have been widely studied and frequently reviewed (Baglioni, 1979; Hovanessian, 1979; Lengyel, 1982; Sen, 1982). In contrast, information concerning the effects of interferons on cell proliferation and differentiation has only been obtained during the last decade, as our understanding ofmechanisms ofgrowth regulation and gene expression in eukaryotes in general has increased. This review aims to summarize the current situation regarding these actions of the interferons and suggests areas in which our perception of such control of cell function may be expected to increase.

Effect of Adenosine Agonists on the Proliferation and Differentiation of Chick Embryo Fibroblasts in Three Dimensional Reconstituted Tissue Constructs
Previous studies indicate that organ fibroblasts play an important role in wound healing, collagen production, remodeling processes and pathogenesis of progressive heart, lung, renal and hepatic fibrotic diseases. Several studies suggest a possible inhibitory role for adenosine in the regulation of fibroblast proliferation. The effect of adenosine A2 agonists on proliferation and differentiatio...

In vitro expansion of mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) into large number is necessary for their application in cell-based treatment of articular cartilage defects. On the other hand, some studies have indicated that BIO (6-Bromoindirubin-3-Oxime) possesses mitogenic effects on cell culture. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of BIO on in vitro expansion and chondrogenic di...

Objective(s) It is believed that the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation and proliferation are the results of activation of wnt signaling pathway. On the other hand, lithium chloride is reported to be able to activate this pathway. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lithium on in vitro proliferation and bone differentiation of marrow-derived MSC. Materials and ...
متن کاملThe effect of BMP4 on mouse embryonic stem cell proliferation and differentiation into primordial germ cells
Background and Aim: Artificial gamete production from stem cells is a novel strategy for treatment of infertility. Among various stem cell sources, embryonic stem cells (ESC) can be considered as an appropriate source for in vitro formation of germ cells. In this study we evaluated the effect of BMP4 on proliferation and differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells into primordial germ cells (...
متن کاملPLLA/HA Nano composite scaffolds for stem cell proliferation and differentiation in tissue engineering
Abstract Due to their mulitpotency, Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), have the ability to proliferate and differentiate into multiple mesodermal tissues. The aim of this study was to isolate MSCs from human Umbilical Cord (hUCMSCs) to determine their osteogenic potential on nanofibrous scaffolds. To this end, Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/Nano hydroxyapatite (HA) composite nanofibrous scaffolds were...
